While landscapes have always been the primary focus of Paul Horan's paintings, he does not use them literally. "They are essentially a revelation of atmosphere," he says. He hopes they begin to portray, in some spiritual way, certain truths of where we have been and where we wish to go as human beings; even if this means we are alone, exposed, and disconnected. He believes his work is enigmatic, and says he makes no attempt to resolve this quality. Interpretations, which are too literal, miss the mark. He sometimes chooses not to share his personal intentions of a particular work; believing that meaning and understanding are constructed, formed at the point where art and the viewer interact.
