Employing a broad range of subjects, I'm usually exploring the general theme of my relation with my environment. Scapes of sea, land, & sky mix with found objects, nature, or pivotal events to form the basis of a series.
My paintings sometimes appear tangled and complex, and like life, offer interrupted views.

Holding a balance of figurative and abstract qualities, I relay on memory for inspiration, or photographs and films and other 'scrap' and snippets of colors I find in magazines or objects collected.
Approaching painting in this way offers a sense of the common place, translated into a heightened, and hopefully, timeless moment. I categorize my work as Contemporary Realist.

Early on I was influenced by the Fauvists (like Andre` Derain) for their vibrant use of color. The English painter, Peter Doig is a favorite to look at, even though I think his work is crap, and I always hope my style is has been by Richard Prince, Jennifer Bartlett, Kiki Smith, Julius Hatofsky and some of the Northern California abstract Expressionist painters, such as David Park, Nathan Olivera & Richard Diebenkorn.

I studied painting (and welding) at the San Francisco Art Institute (1989-92) beginning study with the magnificent Joan Brown before her untimely death in India. Studing also with SFAI instructors Carlos Villa, Julius Hatofsky, and Chester Arnold. Art methodologies with Chester Arnold at College of Marin was profound. My few years of private study with abstract expressionist painter Julius Hatofsky I remember as one of the best parts of studying art.
